Barolo

Barolo is the great wine of our region, and indeed one of the greatest of all Italian wines. It comes from noble and historical lineage and its appreciation began at the start of the XIX century thanks to the Piemontese nobility: Marchese Falletti, Camillo Benso, lord of Cavour, and of course the royal House of Savoy. Barolo is made exclusively from Nebbiolo grape, cultivated on hill vineyards in 11 communities of the Langhe, located mainly to the south of Alba.

At Cascina Fontana, we are fortunate to have in our family vineyards that are located in the very heart of this distinguished zone, on the favored “cru” or named vineyard site of Villero, located in the commune of Castiglione Falletto.  In order to produce Barolo, which we make only in the best years, we rigorously select the finest and ripest Nebbiolo grapes. After winemaking, maturation takes place in traditional medium-size Slavonian oak barrels, followed by further bottle ageing in the Cascina Fontana cellars.  Our Barolo is a complex and austere wine, yet even in its youth it is approachable and indeed wholly enjoyable. Its color with age becomes garnet red with orange tones. The bouquet is deeply rich and harmonious, with complex scents of rose and liquorice. In the mouth, it is full, voluptuous and very long. In youth perhaps the wine may appear somewhat closed, but it is never hard or harsh, for the tannins that are such a feature of traditional Barolo are nicely balanced and sweet. With age, Barolo opens considerably to reveal its full and majestic character. This is a great wine suitable for lengthy conservation, to accompany the finest foods, and simply to enjoy with likeminded friends and wine lovers.
